Level 3 and Level 4 First Responders are trained in essential pre-hospital emergency care, with Level 4 possessing more advanced skills. Both are proficient in airway management, basic life support, trauma care, burns management, and handling medical emergencies. Level 3 responders focus on foundational skills like CPR, AED use, and emergency oxygen administration.
Level 4 responders have additional capabilities, including immediate life support, use of medical gases, ECG monitoring, and responding to specific situations such as mental health crises and major incidents. This expanded skill set allows Level 4 responders to provide more comprehensive care in a wider range of emergency situations, bridging the gap between initial response and advanced medical intervention.
Paramedics are highly skilled healthcare professionals who operate independently in pre-hospital and emergency settings. They are registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as autonomous, pre-hospital clinicians. Paramedics possess a comprehensive set of clinical skills that allow them to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients across a variety of urgent and critical care situations. Their scope of practice includes administering medications, performing advanced life support techniques, and even carrying out certain surgical procedures outside of hospital environments.
Paramedics are qualified to make crucial decisions about patient care, including when to discharge patients or refer them to other healthcare services.
